USC Golfer MacWhinnie in First Nationwide Tour Event

Bobby MacWhinnie, the local golfer from Upper St. Clair and the University of Maryland, teed it up yesterday at the Panama Claro Championship on the Nationwide Tour.

MacWhinnie spent last season playing the NGA Hooters Tour, and did well enough at PGA Tour Qualifying School, to make this years Nationwide Tour.

This is MacWhinnie first event, he shot a +4 – 74 in the first round and is in danger of missing the cut.

He joins John Mills, who is at 1 over, as 2 locals who are trying their luck at making the PGA Tour next season.  Last year Indiana, PA native Steve Wheatcroft qualified for the tour by finishing in the top 25 in money on the Nationwide Tour.

Wheatcroft Makes First Cut of 2010 in Mexico

While the Accenture WGC took place in Arizona this week, the regular PGA Tour took a trip to Cancun Mexico and played the Mayakoba Golf Classic.  Local golfer from Indiana, PA – Steve Wheatcroft made his first cut of the year, in this his 4th tournament of the 2010 PGA Tour Season.

Steve shot a (-2) 282, good enough for a tie for 48th place and $8,948.57.  His scores were 67, 70, 71 and 74.  Steve was 3 over on his last 3 holes in his final round or he could have finished much higher.  He started Sunday in 29th place, but dropped 19 places with his above par final round.

Wheatcroft will not be in the field this week at the Waste Management Open in Phoeniz, AZ.

Nathan Smith is 2nd in U.S. Amateur Rankings

After claiming his second Mid-Amateur title on Oct 9th, local golfer Nathan Smith 31 of Pittsburgh PA, has climb his way to #2 in the Amateur Rankings.

Smith’s 7-and-6 triumph over 33-year-old Tim Spitz of Rochester, N.Y. made Smith, a financial advisor, the fifth multiple winner of the USGA national championship for golfers 25 and over.

It also completed an outstanding summer for the 2003 Mid-Am champ, one that also included playing on the victorious USA Walker Cup Team and helping Pennsylvania capture its first USGA Men’s State Team Championship.  Smith’s accomplishments this season will likely get him an invite to the 2010 Masters.

Wheatcroft in the Field at Torrey Pines

Local PGA Tour Player Steve Weathcroft

Local touring professional Steve Wheatcroft from Indiana, is entered into the Farmers Insurance Open, at Torrey Pines Golf Course this week in La Jolla California.

Wheatcroft is playing in his second full season on the PGA Tour, after spending last season on the Nationwide Tour.  He received a full exemption this season, by finishing in the top 25 on the money list.

Steve now lives full time in Jacksonville, but still comes home frequently, as he still has family in the area.

Look for Wheatcroft to play in 25-30 events this year on tour.  He already played in the Sony Open in Hawaii, but missed the cut by 2 strokes.

Nationwide Tour Coming to Southpointe for 2010

This September 2nd – 5th, the Nationwide Tour will be coming to Southpointe Country Club, for the Mylan Classic.

This will be the first time that a men’s professional golf tournament has been held in the area, since the US Open was at Oakmont in 2007.  The Nationwide Tour last played in the area, at Quicksilver, in what used to be the Quicksilver Open in 1990-1992, when it was called The Hogan Tour.

The return of the Nationwide Tour will give Western Pennsylvania two professional tournaments next summer. The other is the U.S. Women’s Open scheduled for July 8-11 at Oakmont Country Club.
